I have added a new website to the blog. It is www.multiplication.com. A great website that allows students to play a variety of games that encourage them to practice their multiplication times tables. Games that focus on addition, subtraction and division can also be chosen if any practice is needed in those areas as well. When you arrive at the website, select the link to "multiplication games" on the lower top row. That will bring you directly to a variety of games that practice this skill! Good luck!

Another new website has been added to the blog! Dance Mat Typing can now be used by students! We recently began using the laptops to type and will be doing it more throughout the year (especially for bigger projects etc.) and typing is a great life skill that we will be practicing. If anyone wants to start practicing now, Dance Mat Typing will be a great tool. Students can start at Level One and work their way through the levels. Although some students may find the first couple levels slow, it is important to start at the beginning to ensure the correct placement of fingers etc. Happy typing!

Math Magician: I have just added a new website that students will be using in computer lab over the next couple weeks. It's called Math Magician and it's a great website for practicing math facts. It is so important that students are quick and fluent with their math facts (adding, subtracting... and eventually multiplication & division). Very soon we will begin addition and subtraction with 3 or 4 digit numbers and being able to add/subtract those digits quickly and CORRECTLY will help students immensely! The more practice of basic math facts the better! So play lots! :)

Here's a quick overview of what you can do with this website:

These drills are all timed, so quick fingers help! Use your left hand to push the numbers and your right hand to push "enter" once you have the right answer

"Math Magic" - This is what we will be working on during our lab time. Students will be working on Levels 1 & 2 in both addition and subtraction. They must complete the first level, print the certificate & get it signed by me to move on to the next level. Students are welcome to do this at home and bring the certificate in if they like!

"Addition" - If you click on addition you can practice specific adding facts such as +7 or +8. CHALLENGE yourself! Choose one that you are struggling with rather than one you already know like +0 or +1. You can also choose an option of doing the mixed questions which will also help you practice for the "Math Magic" drills!

"Subtraction" - This page, as well as the "Multiplication" and "Division" are set up the same way as the "Addition" page. Feel free to challenge yourself with the multiplication and division questions if you are finding the adding and subtracting too easy.

Once you have selected one of the options on the home page, choose what you would like to practice by clicking on it. Then enter your name and push the START button. Have fun!

On this page, I will be explaining some of the new links that I post for the students to explore. If you look on the right side of the blog you will see a number of links. Here is an explanation of what is available so far:

Cool Math Games: This site has a whole bunch of fun math games that practice a variety of math skills. Students always love this website!

Spelling City: Students can practice their weekly spelling words by playing fun games!

National Geographic: This National Geographic site is engineered specifically for kids. Students always love checking out the interesting animals and photographs on this site!

Brain Pop: Brainpop has a number of educational videos geared towards learning outcomes in Grades 4 and 5. Students do not have access to all the videos but they can check out the featured videos and games. We will be using this website in class as well.
